How to Fusible Applique with Freezer Paper
These instructions refer to CD Designs' heart printed on freezer paper

Maybe you just do not have the time to hand applique but still would love to create something beautiful. Well there is fusible applique. It is fast fun and easy. These instructions will step you through Fusible applique using freezer paper.

A simple fusible applique is the heart. Preheat a dry iron to the silk setting. Lay the fabric, that you have chosen, face down on the ironing board. Lay a piece of HeatnBond, paper side up, big enough for the heart on top of the fabric. Lay the freezer paper pattern, shiny side down, on top of the HeatnBond. See Figure 1.

Figure 1

Glide the iron across the pattern, HeatnBond, and fabric lightly for 1-2 seconds. After cooling, check to see if the freezer paper is stuck to the paper backing of the HeatnBond. If it peels off easily, iron a little longer. Be very careful because, overheating will cause the freezer paper to stick to the HeatnBond paper permanently.

After the fabric has cooled, Carefully cut out the Heart along the solid line.

Peel off the HeatnBond paper backing. Separate the HeatnBond paper backing from the freezer paper. Adhesive should appear milky in color. A shiny, clear adhesive is a sign of overheating.

Place the HeatnBond fabric Heart right side up in the desired position of your background fabric and iron for 4-6 seconds. (Ironing time may need to be increased for heavier materials or when using several layers of material).

Now your appliqued heart is finished!

Important Tips

1. Before working with HeatnBond, always prewash all fabrics and pre-test on a piece of material you will be using.

2. DON'T OVERHEAT
a. Overheating will cause the freezer paper to stick to the HeatnBond paper permanently.
b. Overheating will cause an insufficient bond. If this occurs, reapply HeatnBond following the general directions.

3. DON'T SEW - Due to unique thickness of the adhesive, machine stitching is not recommended.

4. Remove any adhesive from your warm iron easily with a fabric softener sheet or a dry cloth.

HeatnBond described is called UltraHold HeatnBond that you may be able to find at your local fabric stores.
