English Paper Piecing Coaster Instructions

This project was provided by Rowena Boyd

These instructions show you how to make one of the coasters.
You can use the same procedure to make all the other coaster designs.

For this project you will need:

  • six 1" paper piece half hexagons from CD Designs
  • one 1" paper piece hexagon from CD Designs
  • one 2" paper piece hexagon from CD Designs
  • three different scrap fabrics
  • small square of quilt batting
  • iron, needle and quilting thread

Basting the Shapes

Chose three contrasting colors #1, #2, and #3 and baste the shapes in the colors shown:

  Shape Size Qty Color
  Half Hexagon 1" 3 #1
  Half Hexagon 1" 3 #2
  Hexagon 1" 1 #3
  Hexagon 2" 1 #2

Making the top

Whip stitch the basted half hexagons and 1" hexagon together to make the top as shown in Figure 1.

Figure 1

Cutting the Batting

Lay the basted 2" hexagon on to some batting. Trace on the batting around the hexagon as show in Figure 2. Cut the batting on the inside of the tracing marks, so that it will be a bit smaller.

Figure 2

Closing the Coaster

Mist the top and bottom with water and iron them to set the seams.

Remove all the paper pieces. Save your paper pieces to be reused.

Lay the batting between the top and the bottom and pin in place. See Figure 3. Whip stitch all around the out side edge pushing in the batting as you go.

Figure 3

Quilt in the valley of the twelve seams as show in Figure 4.

Finishing Up

Hand wash the coaster. Iron until no more steam comes from the coaster. Lay the coaster on a flat surface to finish drying.
